About the programme
This doctoral Political Science program from Universidade de Aveiro aims, generally, to provide high quality advanced training in Political Science, and generate valuable contributions to research in this area. In this context, the course objectives are:
- To offer and develop advanced methodological skills, both in theoretical and conceptual research and in empirical research.
- To familiarize the students with the most advanced state of the art in research in the areas of Political Science this course articulates.
- To deepen and develop the critical reflection of the great sources of political thought, and their application to the current social and political questions.
- To promote internal interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary work, accessing different methodologies and knowledge of different areas in Political Science.
Graduate Profiles
The students will have two dominant employment profiles. First, research and academic careers, with graduates expected to integrate research and teaching activities nationally and internationally. Second, positions in think tanks, NGOs, consultancy and high level public administration, where there is latent demand at regional and national levels.
Study content
The students who complete the course should:
- Have a developed and systematic understanding of, at least, one domain in Political Science, which implies having high level skills of thinking, analysis and in the use of methodological resources.
- Demonstrate the ability to conceive, plan and complete original and high level research in Political Science, bearing in mind the demands of quality and academic ethics.
- Have completed original research, most notably the doctoral dissertation, capable of being an effective contribution to the existing knowledge in Political Science, and at a level that merits wider distribution (e.g. peer-reviewed journals, academic monographs).
- Demonstrate the abilities of reflection, questioning, critical analysis and synthesis of complex ideas.
